He Took His Cat to Prom, and Stole the Spotlight

Ruby the cat isn’t just a pet, she’s family. So when Sam Steingard couldn’t find a prom date, he chose the purr-fect standby at home. Sam’s mom dressed Ruby in a tiny gown with a sparkly collar, and his sister Caroline snapped the photos that melted the internet.

Ruby’s backstory is just as sweet: she was found behind a Ruby Tuesday restaurant years ago, hence the name, and grew up alongside Sam and Caroline. Friendly and chill, Ruby loves people, cuddles, and being carried. Caroline says Ruby even used to walk her to school and meet her again after class.

“Sam talks to her in a baby voice and sneaks her treats,” Caroline told Love Meow. Ruby returns the affection with face hugs and steady purrs.

Both siblings have since graduated, but whenever they’re home, they make a beeline for Ruby. Prom night may have started as a joke, but the photos show the truth: sometimes the best date is the one who’s been by your side all along.
